Modern technology is changing the shape of our world as satellites and computers bring once distant lands to our desktop. Helicopters and hidden cameras monitor our traffic and the military read number plates from space. As the net of technology pulls tighter around us, the dream of adventure and discovery becomes even more powerful. This is the essence of an Adrift river journey; stepping beyond the bondage's of modern life, brewing coffee over an open fire and venturing boldly into the unknown.

Treadingly Lightly

All of our trips have little impact on the local environment and support people in the areas we raft. We leave only footprints in the sand and smiles on the faces of the people we visit. We seldom erect permanent structures and carry out or burn all non biodegradable waste. All of our trips are sustainable on a long term basis and we work closely with several governments advising them on the management of their natural resources. We use gas stoves in all countries where we would compete with local villagers for firewood. We burn wood supplies only where these are ample and have little impact on the ecology of the area.

We purchase all of our supplies in the street markets and towns of the countries we visit. Adrift hire transport locally and contract tradesmen to make special equipment we use on the expeditions. Raft harnesses, equipment bags, cooler frames. Rowing rigs and gear bags are just some of the things we have made in-situ. Adrift is committed to making our adventures a long-term prospect for both the friends who join us from overseas and those we have made in each destination. We want our local friends to continue to welcome us back with smiles and open arms knowing that our visits are of benefit to all involved.

Video Insights

We have produced a short promotional video which offers a glimpse of the magic of a river journey with Adrift. Both NTSC and PAL copies are available for purchase or to borrow for a small refundable deposit, or glimpse it in QuickTime format (2.5MB).

  Travel Evenings

We host regular Travel Evenings in the UK where you can hear first-hand about our expeditions. We provide short informal slide shows about whitewater rafting, the experience of a river journey, and some background to the places we visit. We also show video clips of recent expeditions. Simply contact us to check on our next available evening.

Equipment

We use the best equipment available, much of it developed from our own experience. Avon rafts are custom-made for Adrift. We supply lightweight tents, high buoyancy lifejackets, safety helmets, durable drybags and watertight Pelican cases to protect your cameras. Emergency rescue equipment, EPIRBS (emergency distress beacons) and a comprehensive first-aid kit are important parts of our equipment. Our valuable experience ensures we are extremely well equipped before embarking on any expedition.

Beach Your Involvement

The essence of an Adrift journey is team-work and we rely on each other working together to reap the rewards of the adventure. From rigging the rafts in the morning to cooking dinner in the evening, everyone is involved in an Adrift expedition. You must be prepared for the frustration and inadequacies of the third world, to take the rough with the smooth, and for the unpredictability of true adventure. There are some risks, as there are in all activities, but we do our best to minimise these.

Please make time to contact us to discuss which river and part of the world might best be suited to your interests and experience. We can also answer the myriad of questions that will undoubtedly occur as you surf this site. We have a wealth of rafting experience and can offer an encyclopaedia of knowledge from the level and temperature of the water to which insect repellent to pack.
