If you were given the powers to create
a land and you wanted it to be perfect, you might create Chile
- the land of milk and honey. It is one of the nicest places
on earth. The country side varies from the worlds most arid
desert in the north to the fertile central valley where fruit
grows abundantly, to the temperate rainforests of Patagonia
and the glacier fields of the very south - Tierra del Fuego.
The landscape is dominated by snowcapped volcanoes. The many
rivers that drain the mountains make Chile a kayaker's paradise.
Rivers run clear and clean. The relatively underpopulated expanses
of wilderness in Chile make it one of the last places where
pristine nature persists and mountain peaks remain un-named
and yet to be climbed.
What sets the tone for Chile are its warm hearted and hospitable
people. From the Auracaria Indians to the Spanish descendants one
finds a culture varied; rich in texture and language. They are
humble, and welcoming and love their country.
The Futaleufu river valley was uninhabited until the 1920's and
the Chilean cowboys (huaso) proudly preserve their identity today
in the valley. They live simply using traditional oxen carts for
transport and each summer welcome a handful of adventurers to the
Rio Futaleufu. Its azure colour and frothy white water are the
stuff that make up some of the most continuous rapids on a river
anywhere. It is a large volume river with huge holes and powerful
hydraulics, yet with skillful navigation and aerobic paddling,
rafts burst through the white water and crest the peaks of mighty
wave trains only to leave the paddlers drenched and grinning with
pure pleasure. Come and paddle the Rio Futaleufu. There really
is no other river like it.
We are delighted to add the Water by
Nature trips on the Rio Futaleufu to our portfolio. Water by Nature
share our enthusiasm for exploring wild rivers, for the safety
of those running those rivers and for preserving these wild waterways
and their surrounds for future generations. Water by Nature will
ioperate the trips on the Rio Futaleufu and Adrift will continue
to operate all others. We look forward to working closely with
them in the future.
